Biography


Verner D. Mitchell is a professor of African American Literature at the University of Memphis. He received his PhD in English from Rutgers University and previously taught at the U.S. Air Force Academy. His most recent books, co-authored with Dr. Cynthia Davis, shed light on WWII soldiers: Images in the River: The Life and Work of Waring Cuney (2024) and In Flaming Letters: Lucia Pitts, Poet of the Six Triple Eight (2026).
