Call for Manuscripts
JBMS is pleased to announce its inaugural call for manuscripts. Submissions open September 27, 2025.
Submission Deadline: Rolling
Anticipated Publication Date: Rolling publication begins Winter/Spring 2026
The Journal of Black Military Studies, the diamond open access journal of the Society for Black Military Studies, publishes on a rolling basis in partnership with the University of Vermont Press. In keeping with the society’s mission, JBMS aims to promote worldwide understanding and appreciation of, as well as greater dialogue about, the Black military experience, distinguishing this new discipline as distinct from the field of military history. We cover a wide-ranging field of global Black military studies from its earliest phases to the more recent past, including topics such as war, armed conflict, resistance, and military participation.
The inaugural issue of JBMS will be published beginning in Winter/Spring 2026. For this general call, JBMS invites scholarly articles, essays, and interviews that:
- Are original and innovative in content, scope, and interpretation
- Make distinctive contributions to historical knowledge
- Use and/or reflect Africana methods
- Approach their subject matter in an open, accessible, jargon-free way that resonates with scholars as well as a broader readership.
The JBMS Author Guidelines include full information on article types, citation style, file formatting, and required documents. Read the Author Guidelines, Ethics Overview, and AI Policy prior to preparing your submission.
To submit, use the JBMS online submission platform. All submissions must include a cover letter, Microsoft Word manuscript file, and signed Author Agreement Form. If you need accommodations for a submission, contact Aimee Diehl or email your request to jbms@uvm.edu.
JBMS is entirely free for authors and readers. There are no submission or publication fees.
