Biography


Dr. Gregory Mixon is Professor Emeritus of History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and affiliate faculty: Africana Studies Department and American Studies. He is currently working on a book on Black militiamen in North Carolina and South Carolina, 1865-1898. Dr. Mixon is a scholar of Southern racial violence, African American militiamen in the U.S. South, and militiamen in the Black Diaspora.

He is the author of two monographs: Show Thyself A Man: Georgia State Troops, Colored, 1865-1905. (University Press of Florida, 2016), winner of the 2018 Georgia Historical Records Advisory Council (GHRAC) Award for Excellence in Research Using the Holdings of [an] Archives, and The Atlanta Riot: Race, Class, and Violence in a New South City (University Press of Florida, 2005) as well as journal articles on the Atlanta Riot of 1906, late 19th Century Black Atlanta, and Black militiamen in the diaspora.
