Adam Xavier McNeil, Ph.D. is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African American and African Studies at the University of Virginia. Currently, McNeil is revising his prize-winning dissertation, Contested Liberty: Fugitive Women and the Shadow of Re-Enslavement and Displacement in Revolutionary Virginia, into a manuscript, which is under contract with the University of Virginia Press. In Fall 2026, he will begin a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Africana Studies and History position at the University of Rhode Island.
