Biography


Ellis Hurd, Ed.D., (he, him, his) is Associate Director and Coordinator of Graduate Programs in the School of Teaching and Learning at Illinois State University. He is Professor of middle level education within the school.  Ellis has 26 years of teaching experience in various and diverse public middle and high school settings in Illinois and Iowa. After receiving his M.Ed. (2001) in Curriculum and Instruction with emphases in Bilingual and ESL Education from National-Louis University, and his Ed.D. (2008) in Curriculum and Instruction from The University of Northern Iowa, Ellis entered higher education at Illinois State University. He has published on critical race theory, equity and cultural responsiveness, mixed identities, and accreditation and teacher preparation in middle grades, bilingual, and urban contexts. He is editor of The Reflexivity of Pain and Privilege: Autoethnographic Collections of Mixed Identity; and The 2022 Revised Middle Level Teacher Preparation Standards; and co-editor of Equity and Cultural Responsiveness in the Middle Grades; and Integrative and Interdisciplinary Curriculum in The Middle School. He is also Co-Editor in Chief of Middle School Journal and serves as the AMLE SPA Coordinator for Middle Level Teacher Preparation and Licensure/Certification with the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
