Forthcoming Subject-Area Review
Decision Support and Guidance for Applying Hydraulic Modeling to Beaver Dam Analog Stream Restoration Projects
by Hattie Greydanus, Sue L. Niezgoda, and Brian Bledsoe
Abstract
Beaver dam analogs (BDAs) offer substantial ecological benefits, but conflicts with infrastructure, land use, and other human activities can arise where restoration and development intersect. In such settings, hydraulic modeling can support design decisions by helping practitioners evaluate potential system responses. This subject-area review introduces a practical decision‑support tool to help practitioners identify situations where hydraulic modeling may enhance BDA project assessment, illustrated through 3 restoration case studies. We also evaluated 9 approaches for the representation of BDAs in a 2D hydraulic model at a project site that experienced progressive beaver colonization over 3 years. Methods using vertical posts combined with roughness adjustments and inline weirs performed well in simulating BDA behavior and evolution. However, multi‑criteria evaluation revealed trade‑offs in how each approach captured structural complexity and temporal change. Together, these findings provide practitioners with guidance on when hydraulic modeling can add value to BDA design and practical strategies for incorporating BDAs into existing modeling workflows.
