Submissions
This page contains information on the Journal of Ecological Engineering Design’s submission process, including details on formatting, required documents, and more. It is designed to help you ensure your submission is ready for and fits the scope of the journal. Following this guidance will help your paper get reviewed quickly and will ultimately provide a smoother path toward final acceptance and publication.
Before You Begin
JEED recently migrated from another platform, so please read these instructions carefully.
- If you have not done so already, register with Janeway and ORCID. You will be asked to log in to Janeway and provide your unique ORCID identifier as part of the submission process. All registrations are free. When registering for an account on this site, UVM affiliates must choose a username and password combination that does not duplicate any elements of a UVM NetID or password.
- To ensure you receive important communications about your submission, add the domain journals.uvm.edu to your email client’s approved sender list.
- Gather all required files and information, including names, emails, and ORCID iDs for all authors; your cover letter, manuscript, and any supplementary material; and your signed author agreement.
If you need accommodations in order to make a submission, please contact Aimee Diehl, JEED production editor, to discuss how we can make this process work best for you.
To Start Your Submission

About
The Journal of Ecological Engineering Design (JEED) is the open access journal of the American Ecological Engineering Society, published in partnership with the University of Vermont Press. JEED aims to expand understanding of the science and design of ecosystem processes, functions, and services in academic and professional communities.
JEED is free for readers and free for authors.
JEED is among the first academic journals in our field to publish under a diamond open access model: The content is always freely available to readers via the internet, and authors do not pay any fees to publish. JEED is open to submissions and publishes articles on a rolling basis.
Aims and Scope
The Journal of Ecological Engineering Design (JEED) aims to expand understanding of the science and design of ecosystem processes, functions, and services in academic and professional communities.
JEED invites short communications (JEED-I), original research papers, subject-area reviews, research case studies, and design research portfolios rooted in the fundamentals of ecological engineering—“the design of sustainable ecosystems that integrate human society with its natural environment for the benefit of both” (Mitsch 2012). Published studies will provide analysis of complex connections between physical, chemical, and biological systems within an ecosystem context, with a focus on design of nature-based solutions to complex, multi-sector problems spanning local to global scales.
JEED is among the first academic journals in our field to publish under a diamond open access model: The content is always freely available to readers via the internet, and authors do not pay any fees to publish.

Sections
JEED publishes the following paper types:
- JEED-I: INSIGHTS in Ecological Engineering (~3,000 words). Targeted research and science communication focused on compelling INSIGHTS in the field.
- Research Paper (~6,000 words). Article of original hypothesis-driven research based on new data collection, data analysis, or modeling.
- Subject-Area Review (~10,000 words). In-depth, systematic review of the literature on a specific ecological engineering design-related topic.
- Research Case Study (~6,000 words). Focused examination of a particular case or design innovation within a real-world context, typically assessing before and after implementation of an ecological engineering design or process.
- Design Research Portfolio (~1,000 words plus graphics). Presentation of original research with a visual emphasis on the design approach, process, and results.
- Editorials, book reviews, and commentaries. Contact the Editor in Chief if interested in submission.
Publication Cycle
JEED accepts, reviews, and publishes submissions on a rolling basis.
Once accepted, the corresponding author will work with the Production Editor to prepare for publication, including any final corrections and submission of high-resolution graphics.
Publication Fees
There are no fees or membership requirements to submit to or publish in JEED.
License
JEED content is published under a CC-BY-NC-ND license, which allows sharing and access, in unadapted form, with attribution, but does not allow republication or distribution for any commercial use. Authors of published work retain their copyright.

If the journal accepts an article for publication:
- The authors grant a Creative Commons copyright license in the article to the general public, in particular a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0).
- The authors agree to require that a citation to the original publication of the article in JEED be included in any attribution statement satisfying the attribution requirement of the Creative Commons license.
- The authors retain ownership of all rights under copyright in all versions of the article, and all rights not expressly granted in the author agreement form.
- To the extent that any edits made by the publisher to make the article suitable for publication in the journal amount to copyrightable works of authorship, the publisher hereby assigns all right, title, and interest in such edits to the authors.
A signed author agreement form must accompany each manuscript submission. Please refer to the author agreement form for a full explanation of the publication agreement.
Peer Review
JEED encourages transparency in scientific discourse. Our aim is to provide an unbiased view into the peer-review process to further support our commitment to publishing novel, rigorously conducted ecological design-related science and engineering.
This journal uses single anonymized peer review, as defined by the National Information Standards Organization:
Identity transparency: single anonymized
Reviewer interacts with: editor
Review information published: review summaries, review reports, reviewer identities (reviewer opt in), editor identities
Once a manuscript passes the initial checks, it will be assigned to an Associate Editor who will usher the manuscript through the review process. At least two independent experts will complete a peer review. Associate Editors will invite experts in the discipline of the publication; potential reviewers suggested by the authors may also be considered.
Each published manuscript will include a peer review file with the name of the handling Associate Editor, reviewer comments and author responses. All reviewer comments should be responded to in a point-by-point fashion. Where the authors disagree with a reviewer, they must provide a clear response. The peer review file is published online with the final manuscript as a supplementary document. By submitting their review, reviewers agree to the publication of their comments to authors and ultimately as part of the published manuscript. Reviewers will remain anonymous, although we encourage reviewers to sign their reviews. Under limited special circumstances, authors may opt out of publishing a peer review file.
Peer review files will not contain all the information considered in the editorial decision making process, such as the discussions between editors, editorial decision letters, or any confidential comments made by reviewers or authors to the editors.
Submission Checklist
Authors must ensure their submission complies with all the items listed here. Submissions that do not adhere to these guidelines may be returned to authors for correction.
- The manuscript meets the aims and scope of JEED. Submissions can cover topics related to ecosystems science, ecosystem engineering, and systems analysis, and should focus on informing ecological design. The design process is defined broadly and includes topics related to planning, technology, implementation, assessment, and communication.
- The manuscript has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in the cover letter).
