Call for Manuscripts
The Journal of Ecological Engineering Design (JEED), the diamond open access journal of the American Ecological Engineering Society, publishes on a rolling basis in partnership with the University of Vermont Press. JEED is entirely free for authors and readers. There are no submission, publication, or subscription fees. JEED is among the first academic journals in our field to publish under this model.
Submissions for JEED’s 2026 issue are now open.
Issue 4(1): Open Call
Submission Deadline: Rolling beginning November 6, 2025
Anticipated Publication Date: Rolling beginning April 1, 2026
JEED aims to expand understanding of the science and design of ecosystem processes, functions, and services in academic and professional communities. Published studies will provide analysis of complex connections between physical, chemical, and biological systems within an ecosystem context, with a focus on design of nature-based solutions to complex, multi-sector problems spanning local to global scales.
For this general call, JEED invites submissions that advance knowledge and practice in ecosystem science, nature-based solutions, ecological engineering, and systems analysis that inform design. The design process is defined broadly and may include topics related to planning, technology, implementation, assessment, and communication. We particularly welcome systematic reviews on ecological engineering topics that follow a transparent and repeatable approach to identifying, selecting, and synthesizing evidence (e.g., as outlined in the PRISMA 2020 guidelines), as well as design portfolios that document innovative ecological engineering design processes, methods, and outcomes.
JEED welcomes submissions in these categories.
- JEED-I: INSIGHTS in Ecological Engineering (~3,000 words). Targeted research and science communication focused on compelling INSIGHTS in the field.
- Research Paper (~6,000 words). Article of original hypothesis-driven research based on new data collection, data analysis, or modeling.
- Subject-Area Review (~10,000 words). In-depth, systematic review of the literature on a specific ecological engineering design-related topic. Systematic reviews should follow a transparent and repeatable approach to identifying, selecting, and synthesizing evidence (e.g., as outlined in the PRISMA 2020 guidelines).
- Research Case Study (~6,000 words). Focused examination of a particular case or design innovation within a real-world context, typically assessing before and after implementation of an ecological engineering design or process.
- Design Research Portfolio (~1,000 words plus graphics). Presentation of original research with a visual emphasis on the design approach, process, and results.
- Editorials, book reviews, and commentaries. Contact the Editor in Chief if interested in submission.
Submission Requirements
